These handmade porcelain buttons are made by using porcelain clay that has been colored by mixing it with colored stains that are used in making clay. Once the clay is wedged and ready, I use a slab roller to roll out slabs of clay, Then, I use either textured rollers or rolling pins to roll a texture into the clay. The clay is then cut into the button shapes. When they become leather hard, I clean the edges and put the holes in them. When they are bone dry, I fire them in a bisque fire at cone 04. Next, I glaze them with a 2-3 layers of mid-range clear glaze and fire them again at cone 6. By firing the porcelain clay to cone 6, the clay is vitrified which makes the buttons strong. The color you see is from the color of the clay. These buttons are great for knitting, crocheting, or sewing. The perfect accent or embellishment for a bag, hat, or cardigan.
