These handmade porcelain buttons are made by using several different colors of speckled porcelain clay. I roll out slabs of clay and then, I add small pieces on this slab background to create a design. When I have the design the way I like it, I then roll across the clay to flatten the design. A rubber rib is used to smooth the clay and make sure the design is pressed well into the clay slab. Then, I cut the clay into the button shapes. When the shapes become leather hard, I clean the edges and put the holes in them. When they are bone dry, I fire them in a bisque fire at cone 04. Next, I glaze them with a 2-3 layers of mid-range clear glaze and fire them again at cone 6. By firing the porcelain clay to cone 6, the clay is vitrified which makes the buttons strong. The color you see is from the color of the clay. These buttons are great for knitting, crocheting, or sewing. The perfect accent or embellishment for a bag, hat, or cardigan.
